JENOPTIK Optical Systems, Inc. formed by merger of leading optics companies
Monday, 13 July 2009

Coastal Optical Systems and Liebmann Optical Company are pleased to announce effective July 1st, 2009 these JENOPTIK subsidiaries have merged to form

JENOPTIK Optical Systems, Inc.

The strength of the new company (70,000 square feet of optical manufacturing, 100 employees) and breadth of the product offerings elevate JENOPTIK Optical Systems, Inc. to best in class in North America.

JENOPTIK acquired Liebmann in 1999. Since the acquisition of Coastal in 2002, the two subsidiaries have leveraged the considerable capabilities of Liebmann Optical Company in optical component manufacturing with the systems expertise of Coastal into a broad range of optical solutions meeting our customer’s demanding requirements.

Jenoptik Optical Systems, Inc. will deliver services ranging from design & manufacture of prototype optical assemblies to high volume component manufacturing for applications ranging from UV through LWIR. Primary markets are life science research, defense, semiconductor manufacturing, digital projection, optical metrology and astronomical research.

Hardware Investment Results in Significant Expansion of Optical Design and Analysis Capabilities
Thursday, 07 May 2009

Coastal Optical Systems’ business is delivery of optically tested assemblies and sub assemblies. Success often depends on comprehensive tolerance analysis and the ability to tweak designs for the realities of fabrication.

To take full advantage of the design and analytical tools available and strengthen our in-house capabilities, Coastal recently invested in an eight (8) CPU “bleeding edge” server for optical simulation and the initial results have been quite startling.

“The real advantage of the new hardware is understated by the impressive benchmarking results” says Jay Kumler, president and lead in-house optical engineer at Coastal. The speed allows us to evaluate more potential solution spaces and quickly optimize within the best possibilities to an extent not feasible before. Effective gains from ray-tracing, diffraction calculations and optimization runs with this 8 CPU system seem to far exceed the improvement suggested by the hard benchmark results.

Coastal Optical Systems, Liebmann Optical Company, MEMS Optical, and Jenoptik Polymer Systems exhibited in the JENOPTIK pavilion as part of JENOTPIK | Optical Systems division in San Jose at Photonics West, January 26 – 29.

2009 Photonics West, the largest international photonics trade show, marked the first combined exhibition of Jenoptik’s United States based subsidiaries of the Optical Systems division. The joint exhibition allowed for collaboration on problems presented by visitors utilizing strengths of the whole group: design and fabrication of micro optics, of polished optical elements, of lens assemblies and of polymer lens systems including mechanical and electrical integration.

JENOPTIK introduced a five division structure in 2008.  The US based subsidiaries will exhibit as the combined JENOPTIK | Optical Systems division at Defense, Security & Sensing; Optifab; and SPIE Optics & Photonics during the coming year.

CoastalOpt® UV-VIS-IR lens images the Dead Sea Scrolls

The work, performed in August, is part of a technology qualification for digitizing the scrolls. High resolution visible and IR images will allow for precise detection of deterioration and allow researchers worldwide to view the Scrolls electronically.

Announcement of the work has drawn great interest worldwide including articles in the New York Times.
